Montréal bassist Alex Bellegarde, grew up in Québecs
Eastern townships, where his love for music developed at an early
age. A growing interest in jazz, plus listening to the music of
bass greats such as Ray Brown, Charley Mingus, Scott Lefaro and
Dave Holland, he was naturally drawn to the acoustic doublebass
and soon joined a local jazz trio.
Moving to Montréal in 97, Alex explored the local jazz scene
and while playing the «jams » met up with veteran bassist,
Skip Bey. Inspired and encouraged by Skip, he has gone on to perform
in clubs, head-up jam sessions and play with many of Montreals
finest jazz musicians. He plays in THE VIC VOGEL nine-piece band,
also with Ivanhoe Joliecoeur, Marc Villiard, Yves Turgeon and Yvon
Plouffe in OHMZ, a free-jazz quintet, in duos with Felix Stussi
and Mike Wanner and of course, his own quartet, which includes Éric
St-Jean, Alain Mercure, and Frédé Simard. Exploring
jazz styles such as swing, bop, latin, funk and free-jazz, the quartet
produced their first CD, A Chacun Son Tour, in 2000; two of these
compositions were included in VV Records CD: Montréal
Jazz & Blues Plus. |

Joining the VV Records roster, a second CD was released in March
2002, Alex Bellegarde, One Fine Saturday; twelve original compos,
with Alex McMahon piano, Alain Mercure drums, Frédé
Simard sax and featuring guest, Cuban singer-composer Chiquitin,
on track five.
Through a constant interest for composition, improvisation and love
for his instrument, Alex Bellegarde continues to develop his energetic
style of playing, as well as working to preserve the bond with his
audience. |
