Benoît Piche's dream in 1998: Put together a take-no-prisoners
8-piece rock-jazz-fusion unit featuring his weapon of choice: The
trumpet.
Benoît Piche's reality in 2000? As above, complete with the
hottest -no, make that scalding - rhythm section in Montreal. But
actually, make that four trumpets.
Well, if you've witnessed the Four Brass live, whether doing their
own thing or tributing arranger great Bill Chase, or heard their
VV Records CD To Chase, you know Benoît Piche means business.
Having brought that marvel into being and got the group off the
ground, Piche is aiming high, hoping to eclipse this remarkable
accomplishment with a new challenge and a new album due out the
summer of 2001.
"The passion is in the energy of the band, and we're starting
new compositions, original music, sociaux music. The message is
that it's for the people. I've started the new album [with the ambition]
of touring not only Quebec, but the whole world. "

Piche's journey began at College St. Laurent when he had the lead
trumpet chair of Le Jazz Rock Big Band which toured across Canada,
winning raves and competitive supremacy. Incidentally, his musicianship
is also a contributing factor in another group's wild success:
Atrostomic, the last album by Quebec roots sensation Les Colocs
reached 200,000 units in sales. Not bad for a jazz guy.
And as the saying goes, for the Four Brass, the future's so bright
they need shades. Benoît sums it up best: "With this
band? I'm going far." |
